The Australian Saxophone Retreat is pleased to present Dutch saxophonist Niels Bijl for a 2 day event including performances, workshops and ensembles. Niels will present a series of detailed workshops sharing his extensive knowledge of saxophone playing and repertoire. His dynamic performances will give participants intimate access to saxophone playing at its finest and regular rehearsals in the saxophone ensemble will provide an ideal setting to explore the finer points of chamber music. Niels is a member of the world famous Aurelia Saxophone Quartet.
This event will an excellent chance for secondary students studying performance (including VCE) to fine tune their skills. University students would also benefit from working with this world class saxophonist. These workshops would also be of excellent benefit to any teachers of saxophone who wish to further their knowledge and expand their professional development.
Hosted at Seacroft on the Great Ocean Road, the retreat provides the ideal atmosphere for the exploration of music in a setting of natural beauty surrounded by stunning ocean views.
Niels Nijl will also be assisted by Jay Byrnes (Australia) and Carmen Nieves (Venezuela). Jay is director of the Sydney Saxophone Academy and is an advocate of chamber music. He has been a founding member of ‘Nexas Saxophone Quartet’, ‘Breathing Winds’, ‘Hadj Saxophone Quartet’, JSB Quartet, ‘Johann Sax Trio’ and ‘Ventos Novos’.
Carmen has performed as a musician in the most important orchestras in Venezuela, OSGMA, Guarico Symphony Orchestra, Orquesta Sinfónica de Falcón, Caracas Youth Symphony Orchestra, Orquesta Sinfonica Venezuela, Orquesta Sinfonica Simón Bolivar, and Simon Bolivar youth Orchestra under the direction of the Masters Tsun Kwak, Alfredo Rugeles, Eduardo Marturet, Wayne Marshall, Antonio Saiote, among others.
Host of the Australian Saxophone Retreat Barry Cockcroft will also be on hand.
About Niels Bijl
The career of Niels Bijl is fully dedicated to the versatility of the saxophone. Two CDs with repertoire for tenor saxophone, since 2000 the alto saxophonist of the Aurelia Saxophone Quartet, founder of the baritone saxophone quartet The Four Baritones and the baritone Institute (with Jan Menu ), and duos with recorder player Ronald Moelker and accordionist Gertie Bruin . Besides giving concerts Niels Bijl is active as a teacher , since 2010 at the ArtEZ Conservatory . He is also a greatly appreciated saxophonist for productions of all orchestras in the Netherlands , including the Netherlands Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra.
All these activities have given Niels Bijl the opportunity to give concerts and masterclasses almost everywhere in Europe, Japan, New Zealand, Australia, Brazil, Canada and America.
